Maria Scherer Wilson
Intuitively and naturally, violoncellist Maria Scherer Wilson bridges the sensation of tone, with the sensibility of technique. She is known for her cross-disciplinary collaborations, and can be heard in the Seattle area performing with Degenerate Art Ensemble, B'shnorkestra, John Teske, Tango Ahora!, and Led to Sea. Maria's genuine expression and personalized approach to the cello has attracted many artists. As an amplified cellist, she has played back-up for such popular musicians as Cat Power, Hauschka and Jody Watley. In 2006-09, Maria performed and toured with Florence Henderson, who acclaims her as "...a remarkable talent and brilliant cellist." She has toured internationally with the modern-dance company String Theory and has recorded in well-known studios in Los Angeles (Studio Deluxe, Steven Spielberg Stage) and Seattle (Glenn Sound, London Bridge). A private instructor of cello and a coach with the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra- in-the-Schools Program, Maria is an advocate of music and long-time member of the American String Teacher's Association. In 1999, she earned a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the University of Evansville, and in 2003, a Master of Music in Violoncello Performance from The University of Texas at Austin. At UT-Austin, under the tutelage of Professor Phyllis Young, Maria learned how to express her own voice through her cello. This relationship is unique, and reflects her love of music, discipline and improvisation as she teaches, records and performs.
